Leader Lenore Goodell. 8am-4 pm.
Our route mainly follows the northern edge of the Bernalillo Mesa to some large hoodoos and Ponderosa pine trees. The landscape has dramatic color with views towards the Jemez Mountains as well as Cabezon. The main trail is fairly flat and runs about a mile or so round trip from the parking area. There is little shade. Highlights: the area is canyonlands cutting through layers of limestone, sandstone, and shale, complete with fossils of dinosaurs, fish, plants, shells, and shrimp burrows. We’ll see larger shrubs, wildflowers, grasses, and cacti. On a dry, hot hike last year (5/28/2017) I named 25 flowering species. Bring day pack, water, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, snacks, lunch. Meet at US 550 and Sprint Blvd. Home Depot west of Bernalillo (NW corner of parking lot) at 8:00 am.
