Join us at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park for another Winter Plant Walk. Nestled at the base of the northern Dona Ana Mountains, the park offers opportunities to discover some of the more winter-conspicuous members of the Chihuahuan Desert vegetation: cacti. We’ll find numerous species and explore the patterns of their diversity, both in the park and the desert as a whole. We’ll also be on the lookout for any other desert plants that have stayed green over the winter, appreciate last year’s flowers in the fruits and seeds we find along the way, and look for any sign of an early spring as we walk the trail.
The main plant walk will be on the approximately 1.2 mile Discovery Trail, with short diversions off-trail to look for plants. The trail is generally considered easy, with some elevation gain but no steep inclines. Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended because of the rocks that make up the trail.
Stay tuned for more information, including meet time; this is shaping up to be a fun and informative trip. See you there!
