Short plant walk, Saturday, November 12, 2022, beginning at 1 p.m. and ending around 3 p.m.. Native Plant Society of New Mexico, Las Cruces Chapter, plant walk: “Beginner’s Guide to Flora of La Maria Trail – Fall Edition.” Free for members and non-members. 

Meet at 1:00 pm at the parking area next to the prominent sign for Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument located on the south side of Dripping Springs Road, a little less than a quarter mile past the last houses as you drive east. Here we will access the La Maria Trail system and begin a slow-paced walk, with frequent stops, of no more than one-half mile.

Leader(s) will identify and discuss approximately 20-30 plants (shrubs, wildflowers, and some grasses) seen along or near the trail, explain their features, habitats, uses to humans (if known), when they flower and fruit, and their known relationships to fauna, soils and climatic conditions. Questions and comments welcome.

Participants should not leave the group without first informing the leader(s) of the field trip. If not previously signed this year, participants will be required to sign an annual release-from- liability form before joining the walk. Please, no dogs or pets. Children must be accompanied by their parents. Dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water, and good walking shoes or boots. The walk will last approximately two hours. This is an easy walking trail without hills or obstacles. We may need to occasionally stand aside for hikers and bikers and cattle with a wrangler on horseback.
