While surveying for invasive plants in 2022, John came across a strange thistle above 10,000 ft in the Mogollon Mountains. After passing on photos of the plants to New Mexico plant experts, John learned that it could be a species new to science or at least not known from this area. He sought funding to search the high mountains in July and August to find out more about the thistle and its habitat and unlock some of its secrets. He received grants from the Native Plant Society of New Mexico, Jack and Martha Carter Conservation Fund, as well as the Gila Chapter. He also planned to look for more locations of the rare Graham’s Thistle. Join us in November to hear about his findings.
Meet in WNMU’s Harlan Hall, Room 111, with refreshments following the program. Those who want to join online may request a Zoom link at gilanative [at] gmail [dot] com. (Chapter members will automatically receive a Zoom link by email). All are welcome. For more information, go to https://gilanps.org/events/programs/
