Cerrillos Hills State Park is located off of Highway 14 just north of Madrid. The elevation range is from 5,800 to 6,100 ft. The park features 1,100 years of mining history as well as beautiful views of the Sandia, Ortiz, and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges. Our focus will be on the native flora of the region with a plant list with photos provided by Amigos de Cerrillos Hills State Park. (http://www.cerrilloshills.org/).

The hike is approximately 3 miles long and the total elevation gain is 748.03 feet. The initial climb from the parking lot to the first knoll is challenging for some hikers but can be done at a slow pace. This is very hilly country and some sections of the trail are rocky. The entire hike has full sun exposure so be sure to wear a hat and bring 3 quarts of water and snacks. There is a $5 fee per vehicle (bring exact amount). If you have a New Mexico State Parks pass it is good for the day. Meet at SW corner of Smith’s parking lot at Tramway and Central at 8:00 am.
