Vines have developed different strategies to set down their roots, often in the shade of trees and shrubs, and climb to reach the sun. Some have tendrils adapted to twist and twine around the stems and foliage of other plants. Some have developed holdfasts, hair-like stems that penetrate spaces and pores of other plants and surfaces, such as wood and masonry walls. Others simply send out sprawling or trailing stems that climb into low branches, over boulders, or form a groundcover that blankets open ground.
